Christmas Star appears after 800 years

This year, 2020 has more surprises in store. After Halloween's blue moon, we will be able to witness another celestial event that is even rarer and much more impressive. Moreover, this unique occurrence happens to fall on the winter solstice.

On 21st December 2020, Jupiter and Saturn will come incredibly close to each other, a celestial spectacle that hasn’t been visible on Earth for almost 800 years! It is estimated that the last time this conjunction was seen was on the night of March 4, 1226.

In fact, the two planets of our solar system come that close to each other once in 400 years, but the conjunction isn’t always observable at night. As such, estimates show that it also occurred in 1623, during Galileo Galilei’s lifetime, but the conjunction appeared too close to the sun, so most likely, it was nearly impossible to spot. This time, everyone will be able to see it with the naked eye!

The conjunction also coincides with the winter solstice, which adds a mystical shade to this unique celestial event. Yet, according to scientists, it’s a mere coincidence and we should not seek any hidden astrological meaning in this extremely rare happening.

Will the conjunction look like a single star?
It is assumed that the two planets may appear as a single object, but it all depends on your location and weather conditions. Since nothing similar has ever happened in our lifetime, it’s impossible to know for sure what it will look like.
At the same time, many astronomers believe that Jupiter and Saturn won’t be close enough to form one ‘Christmas star’.

Interestingly, there are some theories claiming that the biblical Star of Bethlehem could have been nothing but another Great Conjunction. Christians all over the world believe that a bright star in the night sky led Three Wise Men to the place where Jesus was born.

MOVING UP unit 4 Listening

Unit 4  We've Been There!  p. 40

What is a "gap year"?
Would you carry a tracking device?

Who said these phrases?

  1. "Cool! I've got a diary of my trip."
  2. "I can contact him if he's in danger."
  3. "I don't mind taking it with me."
  4. "What's the matter? Are you feeling OK?"

Conversation between Ellen and Sam  p. 41

Ellen: Hey, Sam, look at this story in the newspaper.
Sam: What is it?
Ellen: A boy's mum has ordered him to carry a GPS tracking device with him on his gap year.
Sam: So what?
Ellen: Sam! A gap year is all about doing something by yourself, without your parents watching you all the time. Teenagers need to learn to be responsible and independent.
Sam: How old's the boy?
Ellen: 19! He's an adult and his mum's checking what he's doing all the time. She's probably checking to see if he's changed his socks!
Sam: It's a GPS tracker, not a spy camera. She can only see where he is--more or less.
Ellen: It says it's accurate to five meters of where he is.
Sam: Does the boy mind having this tracker?
Ellen: No, he's happy about it because he feels safe. If he gets into a dangerous situation, his mum can find him.
Sam: Well, that's OK then. The other day, I heard about a British student that got lost in Australia for a week because he forgot to take his mobile with him when he went for walk in a forest. The world can be a dangerous place for teenagers.
Ellen: Well, I think it's ridiculous. You have to learn to take risks and have adventures. It's only because we've got the technology that we can make these gadgets. I bet Christopher Columbus and Captain Cook didn't have their mums following them!
Sam:  You're right, I suppose, but this sort of technology can be very useful. It can help people in dangerous situations.
Ellen: You're too sensible! I hope mum tracks you when you go on holiday with your friends next week!

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the tracker? Which do you agree or disagree with?

INVASLI: Reading Tasks Part II - 5 A / L

 READING:

TASK 6 (10 - 12 min) Five multiple-choice questions based on a text taken from a work of fiction, a magazine, newspaper article, or a blog. Tests reading for detail, opinion, tone, purpose, main idea, implications, and attitude.  Read all questions carefully. They are in order of the text.

Task 7 (10 - 12 min)Match the five short descriptions of people to the correct texts. There are 2 extra. Read the descriptions of the people first, looking for the main requirement of each person. There may be two options that seem correct, so re-read more carefully in order to choose the correct one.

Task 8 (10 - 12 min)- Read the texts and use the sentences or shorts paragraphs to fill in the gaps. There are two statements you will not use. Check the verb tenses of the sentences before and after the gap. This could help decide which sentence or paragraph to choose. Only one missing sentence or paragraph will make sense for each gap. Re-read the previous and following sentences along with your choice to make sure you feel it's correct.

Task 9 (8 - 10min) - This is a short text with 10 gaps with 4 options. Tests vocabulary, meaning, collocations, idioms, fixed phrases, phrasal verbs, fixed phrases. Re-read your choice in the sentence to make sure it has sense.

Task 10 (3min) - Match the first part of the sentence with the correct ending. There are 2 extra endings. This tests grammar and linguistic knowledge. Check subject-verb agreement and verb tenses.

INVALSI PRACTICE - 5 A / L

 Test 1 - READING

There are 35 - 40 questions in the Reading Test paper. We will work with 10 different types, but only 5 different tasks will be on the test. Tasks 1 and 2 are level B1, while tasks 3 - 5 are B2. You have 90 minutes to finish the Reading Paper.

Here are 5 different types of tasks:

Task 1 (about 6 min)

True / False (something different has been written, so it is not possible or true) / Doesn't say (it is possible,  but wasn't mentioned in the text)

Tests reading for detail, opinions, purpose, and the main idea.

Suggestion: read the questions before reading the text and check your answers by rechecking the text

Task 2 (about 6 min)
Tests reading for specific information, detail and instructions.
Suggestions: Look for words that are similar in meaning but don't choose an answer just because it has the same words. Be careful about the use of mustn't and don't have to, which have different meanings.

Task 3 (about 10 minutes)
Tests reading for detailed comprehension, understanding attitude, opinion, writer purpose, history, inference and global meaning.
Suggestion: take notes and be ready to change your idea.

Task 4 (about 5 min)
Tests ability to search for and identify specific information.
Suggestions: Read carefully. Type your answers in the correct boxes.

Task 5 (about 6 min)
Tests vocabulary and grammar, sentence structure and the exchange of language messages.
Suggestion: Read carefully before selecting your answer. Make sure it makes sense.

DEAR DIARY - 3 A/L

Write an entry to your diary using the vocabulary on GADGETS and ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES (Moving Up p. 27)

Include the following grammar:
1) used to
2) simple past
3) when/while + subject + verb
4) before/after + -ing form
5) during + noun

HERE IS AN EXAMPLE:

Dear Diary,

Today was a crazy day. I used to think appliances and gadgets were useful and convenient until today.

It all started when I woke up late because I didn’t hear my alarm clock go off.  First, I went to the kitchen to start the coffee machine,  but it didn’t work, so I turned on the electric kettle for some tea.

Before having breakfast, I went to take a shower and wash my hair. On the way to the bathroom, I stepped on a bottle opener and cut my foot. When I turned on the hairdryer,  I saw smoke! I immediately turned it off and went back to the kitchen to warm my croissant in the microwave oven I set the table and prepared my tea during this time.

After some minutes of vacuuming,  all of a sudden the vacuum cleaner stopped working.  Luckily, it just needed to be cleaned.

I decided to surprise my mom and bake her a cake before going out. I used to mix everything by hand until we bought a new food mixer last year. When I added the eggs, the liquid splattered all over! Before taking the cake out of the oven, the alarm on my digital watch rang. It was time to meet my friend for our daily bike ride. When I went to get my bike, the bike lock was broken! I turned on my sat-nav so I wouldn’t get lost and cruised away.

I used to be a super relaxed person, but after today,  I feel super stressed out! While I am writing this, I am listening to my favorite songs on my personal computer.  I am glad this day is over!
