Let's start with some expressions having to do with    HAY :  

  1. Hay Day / heyday - literal meaning of hay day = the day wheat is harvested.  
    Heyday, or to be in one's heyday  = at the peak of success
             Like  Sophia Loren, Fiat may have seen its heyday.
  2. hit the hay = go to bed
  3. make hay (while the sun shines) = take advantage of a situation while you have the chance
         
       
    You have some free time, so make hay while the sun shines and finish your project. 
  4. go haywire = out of control; go crazy; become wildly confused
          
    The stock market has gone completely haywire.
  5. hay - as in the expression, " that ain't hay" = not much money
           
    They made a million euros last year, and that ain't hay!
  6. What the hay? = hay is used instead of other words that aren't widely accepted in public
Let's continue with expressions that have to do with PIGS.
  1. to bring home the bacon = earn a living
     He works three jobs so he can bring home the bacon.
  2. live high on/off the hog = live a life of luxury
     
     They have been living high off the hog since they won the lottery.
  3. when pigs fly = never
      "I'm going to be a famous singer."  "Yeah, when pigs fly! You sing off-key!!"
  4. happy as a pig in the mud = very happy
       She won first prize and is happy as a pig in the mud. 
  5. sweat like a pig = to sweat a lot
     
     We were sweating like pigs after our bike ride!
  6. make a pig of oneself / be a pig  = to eat too much
       They really made pigs of themselves at dinner. / He is such a pig whenever we have pizza.
  7. to pig out =  eat a lot
       
    Yesterday my friends came over and we pigged out on junk food. 
  8. to be a hog = to keep something for yourself 
       
    Don't be such a hog. We all need to eat!   
  9. to hog something = to use more than one's share
       
     Would you please stop hogging the covers? 
  10. to call someone a hog / pig = they are saying you eat too much

  12. Guinea pig = someone or something used as an experiment 
    Guinea pig = someone or something used as an experiment 
    Some scientists have used themselves as guinea pigs.
  13. a slang term for a police officer is pig.
